When we rolled out the new Developer Center pages with the VS 2005 launch last week one of things that we deployed was a couple of reporting tools that we are doing a comparison and analyses of. One of the most interesting reports to me was a report that did a reverse look up on an IP address to determine the city that the request came from.
The most surprising thing to me was that London, England was the top city on the VB Dev Center. With that in mind I guess this blog entry wil ... [ read more ]

This is not possible for everyone and there are many people that had prior builds installed. Dan Fernandez has posted a link to an automatic uninstall tool that can save you tons of time.

New on the ASP.NET site today is a cool thing for deployment -- Web Deployment projects. (Download here .) This is an add-in VS project type that manages an MSBuild file and lets manage you all sorts of build configurations, pre- and post-processing, etc. Included with the new project type is a new utility (Aspnet_merge.exe) that takes as input the assemblies produced when precompiling and merges/consolidates them into smaller sets of assemblies -- if you want, into a single assembly. There is a new article out about KPL , or the Kid Programming Language .
This is a really neat idea that is being supported by Microsoft and was recently featured on the Coding4Fun site on MSDN.
I have played with this some and the syntax is very much like Visual Basic however the IDE it comes with is much simpler and targeted at young kids.
My oldest son has just turned six so this might be a bit to advance for him in a few years I can see real possibilities in our household.

Here is a great "power toy" for .NET developers, ILMerge .
ILMerge will allow you to combine multiple .NET assemblies into one. This allows lots of different possibilities, the most common of which is if you have a project where some of the code was developed by a VB team and others by a C# team. Using ILMerge you can combine these two assemblies into one to distribute to your customers just like if you had coded them in one solution.
Another possible use, if you have built out ... [ read more ]
