Mitch has started a grid , and i'm definitely envious. Are you going to get envy too?

But now I'm allowed to talk about them :) Last week Frank Arrigo contacted me asking if I wanted to be one of the new guest bloggers on TechTalkBlogs . This was way too cool an opportunity to pass up, and an honour to be asked. So I'm there - I've made my first little intro post already, and we'll see how things progress from there. It's funny, but when Darren handed in his crown as the old guest blogger, I was going to write a post just like the one that I did on Friday night , w ... [ read more ]

Since Office 2007 Beta 2 came out, one thing that pops up now and again in the blogosphere is that you can now write blog posts directly from Word 2007. I haven't bothered to try it yet, mostly because I'm not much of a Word (or Office) user - and I'm happy writing blog posts using the web-based authoring tools that come with Community Server. But I've been thinking about it, and there's something that I think is a little off kilter. What is Word for? It's for writing documents. Generally ... [ read more ]

I really like the new CommandLink control that exists in Vista. Actually, it's not a new control - it's just a new style on the button control, but it still looks damn nice. The app we're currently writing at work is being written with with a series of principals in mind, the first being 'make it as dumb as possible, the users of this app are idiots!'. So I thought I'd take a leaf out of the mandates of Vista's design guidelines (Clear, Concise, Connected) and base a bit of our UI on how ... [ read more ]

I bought a new TShirt. Since it arrived, I've been wearing it with pride. What's really sad is that the first time I wore it to work, I got a couple of looks, but nothing was said. When I asked, they just said 'Well, yeah, it's right'.  :)

The esteemed Sahil Malik is doing an all day ADO.net 2.0 boot camp on the 21st of July. Sahil acts like he knows everything - and the problem is, he generally does - especially when it comes to ADO. If you live in the states (ok, so it's a big place - if you live anywhere near North Carolina) go and register and check it out!

I was going to do this anyway, but since Mitch beat me to it , I might as well at least copy his title :) Michael Kleef has posted up the current version of the full session list for Tech.Ed AU 2006, so I guess it's time to start whittling down the list. Out of all the things on, these are the things I'd like to see. The hard part will be much closer to the event, when I can work out what clashes with what, and start making some sacrifices. It's all broken down by category. Rather than d ... [ read more ]

Innovation 2006 was on in Canberra today. It's was the first one of three, but there really weren't any teething issues - smooth, polished, and very enjoyable. Basically my day can be summed up by saying that I spent the day listening to talks from Chuck , Darren , John Hodgson, and JeffA about Vista, Office 2007, WPF, WCF, Workflow, and more Vista, and more Office. Great fun! I even met a famous person - Tech.Peter was there! :) (look up the top) I brought my guys out with m ... [ read more ]
Well, Rob hinted it at it . Then he hinted more . And even more . Then Soma announced it . Then Rob was allowed to talk about it . And now Frank has even blogged it too :) The MSDN Wiki . I'm excited. MS have put up a version of the MSDN documentation for VS2005 and the 2.0 framework inside a wiki - now members of the community can come and add content: code samples, gotchas, discussion items, whatever to every page within the msdn library. This is exciting - if any ... [ read more ]

For the last couple of weeks I've been playing with WCF, Windows Workflow, and other stuff while putting together a new app that we need. It's been a steep learning curve - trying to keep things familiar (as in, the other guys on the team will still be able to follow the code, and follow generally the same architectural principals) while bringing in this new stuff. It's been extremely fun though :) I thought I'd share what I've come up with as our solution for keeping the client and serve ... [ read more ]

I've been running Vista B2 as my primary OS for about 10 days now. I'm still deciding whether to activate it on day 14 or not - little things are getting in my road and pissing me off no end :) Some are forgivable, and things you'd expect from a beta - others are just plain annoying, and I really hope they change before RTM hits. Some of the things that have been getting to me are: The folder view in windows explorer is half the height of the window. For some reason, the 'Favorite Links ... [ read more ]

I realised through the week that my RSS feed didn't include an image within the channel definition - and so I decided that I needed to do something about it :) After researching what was needed to get an image into a feed (this is at the top of the feed, not within a blog post) it was pretty straight forward to add it to not only my own feed, but tor make it configurable for anyone on the CrankyGoblin blogs site. First, I needed to make the URL for the image a property of a blog. So in ... [ read more ]
Yes, I know this is more than 6 months old now, but lately I've been doing a lot of reinstalling and setting up of new logins on other people's computers - and so I have to google search again and again to find the damn download and install instructions. So now I'm blogging it, so that now I only have to search my blog (with my handy IE7 search provider , of course :) From Jason Haley: Earlier this month dredge posted the CopySourceAsHTML for VS 2005 ( Please see the offic ... Windows Error Reporting seems to have been improved in Vista. At least, it looks a lot nicer - although maybe it's just the glass stuff :) One thing they know how to do is call a spade a spade, it seems. This evening I was running a modification to my Office2007 install, and at the same time I tried to start a game - the end result was a bluescreen, quickly followed by a reboot. When I logged back in, Windows Error Reporting kicked in and told me that something had gone wrong, and woul ... [ read more ]

I had an idea about something the guys organising Tech.Ed AU this year could do. I think it's a really good idea - but I'm guessing most other people won't really give a crap :) But in the spiritof caring and sharing, it wouldn't really be right for me to not make the suggestion, would it? Tech.Ed Guy. Tech.Ed Guy! We've got 9Guy, and TabletGuy, and WebCastGuy, and VisualStudioGuy, and SQLServerGal and VirtualLabsGuy.  So where's Tech.Ed Guy? If MS could make them up and ... Last week I talked about how we decided that we'd pay for a ticket for me to go to Tech.Ed afterall, only to be overcome by issues and possibly have my credit card charged twice :) Well, I forgot to post an update. When I got home from work that evening, there was an email in my inbox from the guys who are running the booking part of the Tech.Ed site. For all the hassles I'd been having, they'd figured out I was having trouble, found my info (yes, they had all my details still, so it had ma ... [ read more ]

Now that I've started tracking my Tech.Ed 2006 posts, I remembered the flair competition that we had last year. Which made me realise that I haven't seen any official ones for this year yet. I checked with  Frank , and he said he's sure that they're on someone's todo list. So while I wait, I figured I'd make my own. What do you think? Am I the next face of Tech.Ed?
Darren Neimke has been concentrating on Windows Vista lately. So much so that he's touring the country doing different Vista presentations - user groups, Innovation 2006 , lots of stuff. He's even the guest blogger on TechTalkBlogs at the moment. Since he's been practicing his presentations on the Readify guys in Canberra today, I figured I could get him to come and practice on my team too - it's good practice for him, and I get get a sneak peak at what I'll be seeing next friday. ... Well, we (myself and my wife) made a decision this week. We're going to fork out the money for me to go to Tech.Ed this year in Sydney. Normally we'd never do it - it's a fair chunk of money, and so it's generally meant that if work won't pay, then I don't go. And you can be pretty damn sure that it's rare I get any money out of my employer. As a result, I haven't been since 2003. In fact, I've only been in 2003. :) If we pay now, it's tax deductible for when tax time arrives in a month ... [ read more ]
Having only a few hours ago posted my screenshot of the busy office , I couldn't help but post this too. I've now got home from work, and the downloads of the Vista and Office12 Beta 2s that I kicked off this morning finished successfully. So while waiting for the Winfx Beta2 bits to download (then i can reboot and install vista) I figured I'd install office. It installed successfully, and has been interesting checking it out - but for now, check out this dialog that came up during the ins ... [ read more ]

The whole world knows by now that Beta 2 of Office 2007 is out and available to the whole world. So I'm not going to announce it, since you already know. But I did want to post this picture. I imagine that the server load on the download site is pretty damn heavy right now - so heavy that perhaps the database is under a teensy bit of load. So if a database call fails, what happens? All I can say is that kudos should be given to the people who wrote the code for the top banner on the site. ... [ read more ]

Thanks to Jayson Knight for this mod. Tidbit #5 in his series of Community Server Tidbits today linked to an old post from Scott Water about implementing a CSModule to automatically name new blog posts on submission. Read, implemented, and installed! The only thing that I did differently was to include it withing the CommunitySever.Blogs assembly, rather then create a new one - hey, when you've got the source, you might as well add it to the appropriate place immediately!

Two nights ago I posted about my In-line File Uploader addition for Community Server 2.0. Over the weekend I had less time that I thought I would to keep working on it, but I did fix one fairly important problem. The way I had it written the extra tab that appeared when writing a new post was second - and this caused other tabs to appear incorrectly. A bit of digging around showed me it was because the code-behind for that page had some hard coded tab indexes ( tsk tsk, for shame ). So I' ... [ read more ]

Update1 [20060514]: I've updated the code with a fix for one of the bugs. The first version (and this new one) are trying to insert the extra tab in the second position, but the codebehind for CreateEditBlogPost.ascx.cs was hard coded for a specific order. I've fixed this up, but it also required a change to tabData.xml. See this post for more info. A large percentage of the posts that I make on my blog include some sort of in-line image or some other link to a file I've uploaded to a ... [ read more ]
On Tuesday Frank blogged about getting a new toy from Andy . My quest for MS Toys is starting to become pretty well known - as well as giving one to Frank, he also sent one over to me. Andrew - thanks so much! It's a bobble-head figure of Eric Rudder , but it actually looks pretty damn creepy. I've dubbed him 'Evil Overlord of the Children' . What I can't figure out is what he's doing with his hand - is he trying to look friendly, holding a cigarette, or asking for money? I'm wor ... [ read more ]

You may recall (or may not, who knows?) that a fair while ago I wrote a post in the articles section of my blog entitled ' CSS expressions in IE and Firefox (or, How to make a TBODY scroll without Javascript) '. Now that I've moved to my own server, I finally realised that I can do something about the ones thing that was lacking from it. In the article I cover a few different ways you can make a HTML table scroll while keeping a fixed header, and showing what's needed in different browser v ... [ read more ]

Update [20050508]: Web Application Projects ARE Here. ScottGu provides the details . I do my best not to do posts that are just repeating news that is bound to be spamming the blogosphere everywhere , but this one is too important to pass up. ScottGu has recently posted that the official V1 version of Web Application Projects (read: The correct way of working on web sites in ASP.net 2.0 :) is going to be out RSN (TM) ( R eal S oon N ow) - early next week is the target. Me, I have no doubt :) But lately I'm seeing more and more comments from people (which is the right of every blogger out there, mind you - speaking their mind, that is) that seem to think that they won't. What's sparked me off this time? Scott Bellware posted recently about his idea for Adopt-a-Softie (BTW dude, you better get yourself a trailing  (tm) on that term before someone else steals it!), with the idea that some of the dev team should join the international student exchang ... After Grant yesterday blogged about search providers in IE7 , I thought I might look into what it would take to implementing one here at CrankyGoblin. It ends up that it's a lot easier than I would have thought - there's no need to edit a single file in the CommunityServer source base, or even in the skins. When you're logged into CommunityServer as an administrator, you can specify extra HEAD information in the Site Settings - in the Raw Header section of the Site Content pane. So to th ... When I was catching up on my unread blog posts in BlogLines this morning, I saw a post from Jeffrey Palermo entitled ' Does anyone still use the "goto" statement? Microsoft does - level 100 '. Update: Once I posted this I did a check on the end result to make sure all the links work. It seems the blog post that caused me to write this (linked above to an invalid page) has disappeared - I can't see it on his blog anymore. I have no idea why. Luckily, I can still see it in bloglines :) ... [ read more ]
For 6 months now I've been waiting for the opportunity to start deploying some of our internal applications via ClickOnce . For those who don't know, ClickOnce is a new feature added to the 2.0 framework and VS2005. If you publish your application via clickonce, then you only need to provide a URL to your users - they goto that url, click the install button, and the application gets installed. From that point on, if you publish a newer version of your application, your users, the application ... [ read more ]

Scott Bellware made a post recently entitled 'Mort or Elvis? A Question for a Bygone Era' . So far in response, I've seen a few people raving about what he had to say, and how right on the money he is. And yes, if you distill his post down to things that are only talked about that have direct relevance to the title, then sure, he's spot on indeed! Way to go Scott. But I'd like to this opportunity just to rant (well, mini rant). This is my soap box, so I bloody well will use it! :) Mini r ... [ read more ]
Darren has written a thought provoking piece recently. In a nutshell, he's trying to work what in the geek community is available (or should be) for those have achieved big geek status. Yes, I'm paraphrasing heavily, and you should start by reading his post so that you can really find out what he said. He raises a good point. When you're not just a geek but a total geek, (dare I say it, Uber Geek - and I'm deliberately leaving out the word nerd here) what is there for us besides ... [ read more ]

Well, Code Camp Oz 2, unofficially subtitled 'Return of the I Know What You Did Last Revenge Strikes Back Harder' happened over the weekend. Just like last year, it was a fantastic time. It well put together, a heap of great content, a whole lot of cool people to meet up with and chat with - it was just geeky goodness from start to finish. It all started on Saturday night, the night before it was due to properly kick off. About 50 geeks stampeded on the local Montezuma's restaurant to chat, ... [ read more ]

I noticed a strange behaviour on Dave Burke's blog the other day. He's running Community Server 2.0 like we are here, so anything that happens on his blog I take note of :) I realised that no matter how often I left a comment on his blog, the comment form was not remembering my details. This is sort of weird, because the comment form, which expects both a name and a URL (well, the URL is optional), can be 'remembered' by ticking the 'Remember Me' checkbox. If you check it and submit a comme ... [ read more ]
